More than 20 years ago, while in high school, with aspirations of becoming a medical doctor, Yaniece Gentles gave no thought to pioneering pathways in the corporate world.

Fast-forward years later, this dynamic dynamo is marking a significant milestone in the telecommunications industry and exemplifying the power of leading women in her role as the first female chief financial officer at Flow Jamaica.

In a traditionally male-dominated sector, the appointment of a woman to such a pivotal role signifies a major shift towards inclusivity and diversity within corporate hierarchies. Flow Jamaica’s decision to appoint a female CFO not only challenges stereotypes but also underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a culture of equality and empowerment.

Gentles’s journey of defying expectations extends beyond her current role. Previously, she made history as the first local female finance director at global beverage giant Red Stripe, where she embarked on her 20-year tenure from humble beginnings as an intern.

Just over half a year into her tenure at Flow, Gentles finds fulfilment in uplifting her colleagues and team members. Reflecting on her own challenges as a woman in her field, both locally and internationally, she now channels her confidence into supporting others in their personal and professional growth.

“I absolutely love supporting my colleagues and my team,” she gushed. “I’m now very confident in helping my team members to become their best selves.”

Gentles admits her greatest competition lies within herself, perpetually pushing for self-improvement while acknowledging the importance of self-care and balance.

“I’m always competing with myself, pushing myself to achieve even more. [Whether] I need to take a step back, take some time [or] make room for myself,” the Tastee talent finalist shared with her signature laughter.

“I hold commitments dear and service to others means a lot.”

For Gentles, achieving a harmonious blend of work and life triumphs over the traditional concept of ‘work-life balance’. Her proudest achievement lies in embracing her authentic self while simultaneously navigating her roles as a mother, professional, and community leader.

“Getting to where I am [by] being me, having family and career, just being able to do those things and still thrive are how I create work-life harmony,” the three-time Kiwanis president and Immaculate Conception High alumna shared.

Looking to the future, Gentles harbours a singular wish: for her children – Kaylee, aged 13, and Solae, 5, to recognise their boundless potential and pursue their dreams fearlessly. She credits her mom, Georgia, for the role she continues to play in inspiring her to aim high in all her pursuits, and her spouse, Richard for his strong support of her career goals.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Gentles serves as an inspiration for aspiring female leaders, urging them to seize opportunities, challenge conventions, and assert their worth in every space they occupy.

“There are countless opportunities and women have to be prepared to demand these opportunities and challenge the norms. You have a voice, you are worthy of being included, don’t give it up! Be present,” she charged.
