“Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. But above all, black says this: ‘I don’t bother you; don’t bother me’.” – Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese fashion designer.
Waltzing into self-awareness back in 2012, Ashley-Ann Dennis discovered her personal style. She describes it as a minimal sweet mix of modern and contemporary fashion, in that she sticks to nudes, pastels, and dark shades that cinch the waist and accentuate her lower half. The 25-year-old social-media marketer often opts for simple dresses that are easy to play with when it comes time for styling, and in true ‘minimalista’ essence, she prefers to skip the accessories and focus on a dewy full face of make-up and a pair of statements.
Although Dennis shies away from bright colours, there will be days when she decides to ‘pump it up’ with a smashing red outfit and eye make-up to match, paired with lipstick in cinnamon and a dark-brown lip liner. In the same breath, whatever the occasion, you can always look out for classic denim ensembles from her.
Her style tips:
- Try to have at least one statement piece in each outfit. It can be earrings, a bag, or a pair of shoes.
- Your closet should have blacks and solids, a good pair of denim, at least one leather belt, and a pair of black heels and white sneakers.
- Skin hydration is important. Get your hands on a hydrating cleanser, a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, and a dewy foundation.
