“Hats allow you to make a statement without saying a word.” Fashion designer and owner of Khalil’s Hattitude, Karl Brown, understands this and responds in kind by making bold and extravagant hats for women. In 2018, when he posted new creations to Facebook, a beautiful hat lover shared her interest in a particular design. Little did he know that he was meeting the angel who would soon hold the key to his heart.
At the drop of a fabulous hat, Reverend Dr Nicolette Evans’ eyes remained transfixed on a unique yellow and rose pink design. “That hat spoke volumes to me,” she told Island Wedding. Her Facebook friend, one to whom she had never spoken before, had posted the picture, and she felt compelled to reach out and place an order. Brown kindly obliged, designed, and delivered. Moment of honesty: The two shared no sparks during this business exchange. So what changed?
After their interaction, Karl sent an invitation to his Facebook friend, requesting that she attend a church function with him. This wasn’t your typical event; it was his pastoral ordination service. Nicolette accepted and showed up to show her support. “It was interesting that everyone wanted to know who this lady was, if she was pastor’s friend. But she wasn’t. I had just invited her to church. But I guess some people can see what you don’t really see,” he said upon reflection.
She started visiting the church more frequently from that occasion, and the two became friends, connecting unimaginably. Expressing how he felt over time, reciprocity was in his favour. “I asked the Lord to show me, give me a glimpse of what the person He’s sending for me would be, and the Lord spoke. God told me He was going to be a priest and a prince long before I met him. So He manifested. There were some things I saw in a vision, and the exact stuff happened verbatim. So I sat and waited for the time that Karl would have spoken,” she shared.
The couple went on to date for almost two wonderful years, after which Karl asked his beloved for her hand in marriage. After receiving permission from her parents, he planned the surprise event over a quiet evening at home in their presence, along with his sons. The loving pair got engaged on January 21, 2021, and began planning their dream wedding.
With God as their source and inspiration, Karl and Nicolette were pronounced husband and wife on March 25 at Caymanas Golf Club in St Catherine. The lush green lawns saw streams of flowing ivory, splashes of pure gold, waves of dusty pink, and freshly picked flowers. Event planner Marcel Birthwright spared no effort in securing the matrimonial bliss.
It came as no surprise that the couple would create a wedding theme titled ‘At the drop of a hat’. Specially invited guests celebrated the union, rocking the Hattitude brand in fascinators and bow ties. Others showed their love and support via Zoom.
With sunny skies ahead, the gorgeous and luminous bride elegantly glided up the aisle in a show-stopping luxurious ivory ballroom wedding gown, accentuated with pearls and stones, from LuxBrides Ja. The wedding fashion boutique also provided the stunning bride’s full ‘Get ready with me’ package.
Her groom was suited in Spokes Apparel — a patterned blazer, black pants, and black velvet lap-over vest. The two exchanged powerful and heartfelt vows to the audience of close family members and friends. Sebastian Foster was on location to capture all of the breathtaking moments.
Sealing their nuptials with a divine kiss, the newlyweds shared an enchanting first dance as husband and wife to a rendition of Major’s This is Why I Love You, performed by Knollis King, the talented soloist charged with the responsibility of serenading guests and the couple for the majority of the formal proceedings.
The lovely newlyweds honeymooned at Coral Springs Hotel in Trelawny and Jewels Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, St Ann.
